Officials in Tiburon, California, have approved an ordinance that would ban the sale of all tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, vapes, e-cigarettes, and other nicotine products. The measure, passed unanimously by the town council, will take effect in December and aims to reduce youth addiction and protect the environment. Tiburon Mayor Holli Thier expressed her support, stating that the ban is essential for saving lives and safeguarding the environment.
The decision comes as Marin County grapples with vaping prevalence among youth, with local high school students reporting vaping rates twice the national average. Anti-tobacco advocacy groups, such as the Youth Advocacy Committee (YAC), have been active in promoting the ban, with student Diana Garcia urging continued support to set an example for communities. The town’s move aligns with broader health goals, as Marin County is ranked among the healthiest in California.
However, the ordinance has drawn criticism from the California Fuels & Convenience Alliance, which argues that the complete prohibition discourages small businesses and creates uncertainty for entrepreneurs. The group contends that reasonable regulation rather than a total ban is more supportive of local economies. As the ban nears implementation, the debate continues over balancing public health initiatives with economic considerations for small businesses.
