The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has imposed suspensions on more than two dozen players following a major brawl that occurred during halftime of Grambling State’s victory over Bethune-Cookman. The incident, which took place during the rivalry game, led to nine Bethune-Cookman players and 18 Grambling State players being suspended. The conference also imposed fines on both teams, with Grambling State being fined $40,000 and Bethune-Cookman receiving a $25,000 penalty. The SWAC commissioner, Dr. Charles McClelland, criticized the incident, stating that such behavior has no place in intercollegiate athletics. ‘We’re extremely disappointed by the events that transpired during halftime of the Bethune-Cookman at Grambling State football game,’ McClelland said in a statement. ‘Acts of that nature have zero place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and intercollegiate athletics.’
Footage from ESPN’s Kalan Hooks showed players engaged in physical altercations, with officials and coaches attempting to intervene. The game, which was close with Grambling State leading 24-20 at halftime, concluded with the Tigers ultimately securing a 31-23 win. The SWAC said three of the 27 players involved received two-game suspensions, with the rest being barred for one game.
