Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham, a prominent player in the WNBA, shared a faith-based message on social media as the league’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) deadline approaches. In a post on X, Cunningham wrote, ‘Jesus is King,’ and encouraged her followers to remain focused on what is true, right, and just. ‘Do not waiver [sic] in doing good. Be bold and courageous!’ she wrote. The message reflects her ongoing commitment to her faith, which she has expressed through social media in the past.
Cunningham, who is set to become a free agent in 2026 after signing a one-year deal with the Indiana Fever last season, has been among the most vocal players during CBA negotiations. Her comments come amid ongoing disputes within the league, particularly about the leadership of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Cunningham previously criticized Engelbert over alleged remarks made about Caitlin Clark, one of the league’s top stars. ‘I’m just tired of our league. They need to step up and be better. Our leadership from top to bottom needs to be held accountable,’ she said during an exit interview. ‘I think it’s pretty shameful that she always makes it about her, Cathy, when it should have nothing to do with her,’ she added.
The tensions between players and league leadership have contributed to the delays in finalizing a new CBA. The deal was originally set to expire on October 31, but negotiations were extended through November 30. The latest proposal includes revenue sharing, with a maximum salary of more than $1.1 million available to more than one player per team. The minimum salary would also rise to over $220,000, with an average of more than $460,000. These changes are part of broader discussions on player compensation and league structure.
Additionally, the league is facing pressure from its players’ association regarding concerns over officiating and player pay. Napheesa Collier, the WNBPA Vice President, had previously accused Commissioner Engelbert of making private remarks about Caitlin Clark’s platform in a conversation about salary concerns. Engelbert has denied these claims, but the controversy has delayed the negotiations. Cunningham’s own career has also been affected by injury, as her first season with the Indiana Fever was cut short due to an MCL injury that required season-ending surgery.
A source familiar with the negotiations noted that the latest proposal aims to address the growing demands of the players. The proposed revisions include long-term financial commitments and adjustments to revenue distribution. These changes are seen as a response to the increasing pressure from players for better pay and more transparent leadership within the league. With the CBA deadline fast approaching, the outcome of these negotiations will have a significant impact on the league’s future and the careers of its players.
