Russia Condemns U.S. Airstrikes on Iran, Warns of Global Nuclear Catastrophe

Russian Federation’s United Nations Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia has issued a sharp condemnation of American aerial strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, asserting that such actions may have unleashed a ‘Pandora’s box’ that could culminate in a global nuclear disaster. This declaration emerged following Sunday’s emergency session of the Security Council, where Nebenzia emphasized the potentially dire consequences of the United States’ military engagement against Iran under the Trump administration.

Nebenzia’s remarks highlighted Russia’s firm stance on the issue, labeling the U.S. strikes as ‘irresponsible, dangerous, and provocative,’ with the potential to destabilize the Middle East and provoke large-scale conflict. He cautioned that unless an immediate diplomatic resolution is achieved, the entire international security structure could face existential threats, with the risk of a nuclear catastrophe looming.

Additionally, Nebenzia criticized the Trump administration for its apparent disregard of the humanitarian and radiological impacts of these strikes, potentially endangering civilian populations across the region and beyond. He also criticized the administration for its lack of diplomacy, calling for all involved parties to return to international negotiations and show restraint.

The damage assessment from the IAEA’s Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed the extensive destruction caused by the U.S. military operations at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, including damage to centrifuges and uranium conversion facilities. Despite this, Iran reported no significant radiation exposure, suggesting that the nuclear facilities may have been shielded effectively against environmental contamination.

The situation has prompted an urgent response from U.S. officials, with Trump planning multiple diplomatic engagements, including a trip to The Hague and meetings with NATO leaders, to address the growing crisis and its implications on international relations and global security.
