Teen Arrested for Howard University Shooting That Injured Five During Homecoming

Authorities have arrested a teenager, Kaevaughn Dudley, 17, in connection with a shooting that occurred at Howard University’s homecoming event in Washington, D.C. The incident, which left five people injured, took place during the Yard Fest celebration on October 24. Dudley, who is facing multiple charges, including assault with intent to murder while armed, is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on December 18.

According to investigators, Dudley allegedly encountered a group of individuals during the event, sparking a verbal confrontation. Surveillance footage, which was reviewed extensively by detectives, captures Dudley walking away from the group before firing multiple shots at them using a handgun. Five individuals, including a 13-year-old, were wounded in the attack. The victims, who do not appear to be affiliated with Howard University, include three adult males, one adult female, and one juvenile male. One of the injured is a Morgan State University student who suffered severe injuries, resulting in paralysis from the chest down.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded swiftly to the scene after hearing gunfire, locating the victims and transporting them to a nearby hospital. While the initial investigation saw two 19-year-old suspects being arrested for carrying a pistol without a license, they were later ruled out as suspects in the case. Investigators recovered three firearms at the scene, including a privately made Polymer 80, a Smith & Wesson SD9 2.0, 9mm, and a Glock 19 9mm. Dudley was taken into custody on November 14 without incident by members of MPD’s Criminal Apprehension Unit.

The case has raised concerns about the increasing violence at college homecoming events, with experts warning of a surge in attacks targeting students. The incident also highlights the role of surveillance cameras in modern investigations, as detectives relied on hours of footage to identify Dudley as the suspect. Howard University has not yet issued a statement in response to the allegations, and a legal representative for Dudley could not be immediately located. This tragic event has left the campus and surrounding community in shock, emphasizing the need for greater security and awareness at large public events.
