Saffron May Offer Natural Antidepressant Benefits and Enhance Sexual Health, Expert Says

Research suggests that saffron, a widely used spice, may function as a natural antidepressant, offering relief from depression symptoms and potentially enhancing sexual health, according to Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist and founder of Amen Clinics in California.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, Amen emphasized that saffron not only helps with mood improvement but also supports sexual function, which is often compromised by traditional antidepressants like SSRIs. He referenced a study showing that 30 milligrams of saffron was as effective as antidepressants in randomized trials.

Amen highlighted that while SSRIs may reduce sexual function in patients, saffron appears to have the opposite effect. Additionally, saffron has been associated with improved memory and focus, as well as reduced symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in recent research.

A meta-analysis conducted in 2025, involving over 17,000 patients and 44 nutraceuticals, found saffron to be one of the most effective supplements for depression, with a moderate to large antidepressant effect. However, experts caution that long-term use and high doses of saffron may carry risks such as anxiety, appetite changes, and digestive issues.

While saffron is available in forms like capsules and powdered extract, Amen recommends consulting a doctor before starting any supplement regimen, as the safety and long-term effects of saffron use require further study.
