IRS Accesses Travel Data Without Warrant, Lawmakers Raise Concerns

Lawmakers have raised serious concerns after uncovering evidence that the IRS accessed a vast repository of American travelers’ data—complete with flight details and credit card information—without obtaining a warrant. The data, provided through a commercial data broker known as the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), was sold to government agencies without legal review or oversight, according to a bipartisan letter addressed to major airlines. The letter, shared with 304 Media, criticized the IRS for violating its own policies and federal law. The IRS confirmed it did not conduct a legal review to determine whether the purchase of travel data required a warrant, prompting calls for the data-selling program to be terminated. ARC, which owns the data broker, stated it already planned to shut down the program, following the report’s publication.
