Acid Reflux Emerges as ‘Silent Epidemic’ Affecting Men’s Health
A prominent gut health expert has raised alarms about acid reflux becoming a ‘silent epidemic’ among men, warning of severe health consequences if left untreated. The issue is exacerbated by lifestyle factors such as poor diet, chronic stress, and lack of sleep, which contribute to chronic inflammation and long-term complications, including a higher risk of esophageal cancer.
Men at Higher Risk Due to Biological and Lifestyle Factors
According to Dr. Daryl Gioffre, men are more prone to severe complications from acid reflux, partly due to biological differences. Men produce less protective mucus and saliva, which buffer acid in the esophagus. This makes the tissue more susceptible to damage from recurring acid exposure, increasing the risk of chronic inflammation and conditions like Barrett’s esophagus, which can lead to esophageal cancer.
Impact of Diet and Lifestyle Choices
Gioffre highlighted that men’s lifestyles, such as late-night eating, larger portions, and high caffeine intake, further contribute to the problem. Over time, these habits can erode the gut lining, leading to increased acid reflux and long-term complications. Ultraprocessed foods, particularly those containing refined salt, sugar, and seed oils, are also identified as significant contributors to worsening acid reflux.
Solutions and Preventative Measures
Dr. Gioffre recommends simple lifestyle changes to mitigate the risk of acid reflux. He advises men to avoid eating close to bedtime, as lying down after a meal can exacerbate symptoms. Additionally, managing stress, ensuring quality sleep, and incorporating alkaline-rich foods into the diet can help restore gut health and reduce acid levels. Proactive measures, such as drinking warm lemon water in the morning and practicing grounding techniques, are also recommended to support digestive health and overall well-being.
