UAB Football Player Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Stabbing Two Teammates Ahead of Game

Daniel Israel Mincey, a redshirt freshman at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), is currently facing attempted murder charges after reportedly stabbing two teammates hours before the Blazers’ game against South Florida. Mincey was arrested by the UAB Campus Police shortly before 3 p.m., and his bond was set at $90,000 following an initial court appearance. The incident occurred at the Football Operations Center, just hours before the game kicked off, leading to a significant disruption for the team. UAB officials confirmed the attack took place prior to Saturday’s matchup, with two players injured and a third detained. The university’s decision to proceed with the game, despite the incident, was based on the stability of the injured players and conversations with the team. Interim head coach Alex Mortensen noted that some players chose not to participate, and the team will continue its season against Tulsa on Saturday.

Court records identified the two injured players as Joshua Underwood, a freshman from Fultondale, Alabama, and JaSire Peterson, a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey. Both were released from the hospital, with their families expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support and prayers. UAB athletic director Mark Ingram emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the decision to play was not made lightly. He also praised the team’s resilience and unity, acknowledging the emotional toll the incident has had on the players and staff. Mortensen described the team’s response as heartfelt and collective, highlighting the deep bonds among the players. As the season draws to a close, the university will continue to monitor the situation while prioritizing the well-being of its athletes and the integrity of the team’s season.
