A U.S. official has confirmed that Ukraine has agreed to a peace deal to end the war against Russia, with just ‘minor details to be sorted out.’ The agreement, which was reached during high-level talks between U.S., Ukrainian, and Russian officials, marks a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. The official, speaking to Fox News, confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation has agreed to the terms of the deal, though final details remain to be finalized.
The peace talks were reportedly held in Abu Dhabi and Geneva, where U.S. Secretary of Defense Dan Driscoll and his team met with Russian officials. Lt. Col. Jeff Tolbert, a spokesman for Driscoll, stated that the discussions are progressing well and that the U.S. team is closely aligned with the White House and the U.S. interagency as the talks continue. This follows a leaked 28-point plan from the Trump administration, which initially faced skepticism from European leaders and U.S. lawmakers who were concerned about its balance.
Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., criticized the initial version of the plan, describing it as a ‘surrender document for Ukraine’ that would have left the country at Russia’s mercy for decades. However, he praised the revised version, which was developed with input from Ukrainian and European officials, as a more balanced approach. Bacon emphasized the importance of standing on the side of freedom and the rule of law.
The deal was finalized shortly after Russia launched an overnight attack on Kyiv, which killed at least six people and injured 30 others. The strike on Kyiv, which included attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure, occurred as U.S. and Ukrainian officials were meeting in Geneva to discuss the 28-point plan. Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, cited the Geneva meetings in addressing his country’s agreement to major parts of the peace plan.
‘We appreciate the productive and constructive meetings held in Geneva between the Ukrainian and U.S. delegations, as well as President Trump’s steadfast efforts to end the war,’ Umerov wrote on X. ‘Our delegations reached a common understanding on the core terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva. We now count on the support of our European partners in our further steps.’
Umerov added that Ukraine looks forward to President Zelenskyy visiting the U.S. ‘at the earliest suitable date’ to complete the final steps and finalize the deal with President Trump. This marked a significant step forward in the ongoing conflict and could potentially lead to a resolution that has been long sought by both sides.
