Sanctuary Politicians’ Rhetoric Linked to 1,150% Surge in Violence Against ICE Agents

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported a 1,150% surge in violent attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers over the past 11 months, attributing the alarming rise to the rhetoric of sanctuary city officials. From January 21 to November 21, DHS recorded 238 assaults on ICE officers, a stark increase from 19 during the same period in the previous year.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that the surge in violence is tied to public ‘rhetoric’ from sanctuary-jurisdiction officials, warning that the incendiary language could fuel further aggression. ‘Sanctuary politicians need to tone the rhetoric down before a law enforcement officer is killed,’ McLaughlin said. ‘They should be thanking these brave law enforcement officers who risk their lives every single day to arrest pedophiles, rapists, murderers, gang members, and terrorists from our neighborhoods.’

The incidents highlight the dangerous escalation of violence against ICE officers, ranging from physical assaults to more severe attacks such as vehicle ramming, gunfire, and Molotov cocktail attacks. One officer was struck in the face with a metal coffee cup, resulting in a lip laceration requiring 13 stitches, while another suffered a concussion from a head injury during an arrest.

Specific cases have been cited, including an incident in Homestead, Florida, where a Guatemalan national allegedly reversed his vehicle into an ICE agent’s leg, nearly crushing the officer, and a July 4 ambush at the Prairieland Detention Center, where 10 individuals reportedly opened fire. In June, a fugitive attempted to attack officers with a Molotov cocktail at a hotel near Los Angeles International Airport.

DHS emphasized that these attacks represent a direct threat to the rule of law, urging the public to recognize the dangers posed by targeting law enforcement. The department is calling for a concerted effort to address the rhetoric and ensure the safety of those who protect the nation.
