Sanctuary Politicians’ Rhetoric Blamed for 1,150% Surge in Violence Against ICE Agents

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a stark warning about a 1,150% surge in violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, attributing the spike to the rhetoric of ‘sanctuary city’ advocates. From January 21 to November 21, DHS reported 238 attacks on ICE agents, compared to 19 in the same period in 2024, marking a significant escalation in threats to law enforcement. Officials, including Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, emphasized that the rhetoric from certain political figures has contributed to a dangerous environment, warning that such language could incite further violence. McLaughlin urged lawmakers to ‘tone down the rhetoric’ and acknowledged the bravery of ICE officers who face these attacks daily.

The incidents have ranged from physical assaults to more severe violence, including vehicle ramming, gunfire, and Molotov cocktail attacks. One officer was struck in the face with a metal coffee cup, requiring 13 stitches, while another suffered a concussion and head injuries during an arrest. The DHS stated that these attacks are not only a threat to personal safety but also an attack on the rule of law, highlighting the importance of enforcing national laws without fear of retaliation. Recent examples include a July 4 ambush at the Prairieland Detention Center, where 10 individuals opened fire on federal officers, and an incident in Florida where a suspect reversed his vehicle into an ICE agent’s leg.

The agency also noted the dangerous tactics employed by some individuals, such as fugitive Eric Anthony Rodriguez, who attempted to attack officers with a Molotov cocktail near Los Angeles International Airport, despite having a long criminal record. These attacks, according to DHS, are a direct consequence of the perception that ICE officers are targeted for their badges rather than their law enforcement duties. The department has called for unity and respect for law enforcement, emphasizing that the safety of officers must be a priority as the situation continues to evolve with ongoing threats.
