Portland Man Accused of Threatening Law Enforcement and Their Families

John Paul Cupp, 45, appears in court facing federal charges for allegedly threatening law enforcement officers and their families at an ICE facility in South Portland. The FBI has accused him of making violent threats and posting online content containing antisemitic remarks and calls for war against the United States. According to court filings, Cupp hurled insults at law enforcement officers on October 14, during which he threatened to kill law enforcement and sexually assault their wives. He continued making threats online on November 3 and 13, 2025, according to the FBI.

FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating extremism, stating that those who threaten law enforcement will face the full force of the federal government. U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford reiterated the office’s stance against threats against law enforcement, promising to prosecute such criminal acts to the fullest extent of the law. Acting FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge Matt Torres said in a statement that threats against law enforcement ‘have absolutely no place in our community.’

According to the FBI, Cupp is ‘a prolific producer of online content and regularly posts aggressive rhetoric, calls for war against the United States, antisemitic threats, and threats of violence.’ These posts have prompted the FBI to take action against him, underscoring the agency’s determination to address threats to law enforcement and national security. The case highlights the growing concern over individuals who use online platforms to spread extremist messages and incite violence against government officials and their families.

The court proceedings are ongoing, and the potential consequences for Cupp could include significant prison time if the charges are proven. The incident has sparked discussions about the role of online platforms in enabling extremist ideologies and the need for stricter measures to prevent such individuals from inciting violence. The FBI and other law enforcement agencies continue to investigate similar cases, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law.
