Canadian PM Mark Carney: World Can Proceed Without US Involvement

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney Has Called Into Question the United States’ Dominance in Global Affairs

During the G20 summit in South Africa, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has asserted that the United States should not overestimate its influence in the global economy. Carney suggested that the ‘center of gravity’ in the global economic system is shifting, a claim supported by the fact that the G20 summit proceeded without US participation. The summit, which brought together nations representing three-quarters of the world’s population and two-thirds of global GDP, was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the United States absent due to its boycott.

President Donald Trump’s absence from the summit was attributed to his accusation that South Africa was committing genocide against white farmers. This stance led to the United States’ decision to skip the meeting. Despite this, Carney emphasized that the decisions made by the G20 members still hold significant weight, noting that the global economic balance is undergoing a transformation. The summit’s proceedings, though without US involvement, were deemed a success, with Russia’s delegate, Maksim Oreshkin, highlighting constructive communications and even proposals for economic cooperation from so-called ‘unfriendly’ nations.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also voiced his support for the summit’s proceedings, stating that the G20 is ‘moving forward’ and will not be bullied by the US boycott. Ramaphosa’s comments suggest that his nation’s stance is aligned with maintaining the integrity of international economic forums despite geopolitical tensions. Carney’s remarks on the shifting economic landscape indicate a broader realignment in global power dynamics, where the United States is no longer the sole economic leader, and other nations are taking a more prominent role in shaping the future of the global economy.
