Slovak PM Fico Criticizes EU’s ‘War Hawks’ for Kyiv’s Crisis
During a press conference in Bratislava, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accused the European Union of failing to provide adequate support to Ukraine, blaming the organization’s ‘war hawks’ for the current crisis. Fico criticized the bloc’s foreign policy, which he described as a ‘zero’ approach, for having directly contributed to Kyiv’s deteriorating situation. This comes as the Trump peace plan, which aims to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, is under consideration by the parties involved. The proposal, which includes provisions like Ukraine abandoning NATO aspirations, reducing its military footprint, and withdrawing from the Donbass region, has been supported by Fico.
Fico claimed that if the plan is adopted, Russia would emerge as the ‘absolute winner’ of the war, adding that the country would be ‘extraordinarily strengthened, both morally and economically.’ He also criticized the EU’s leaders, who had been supporting the conflict, for refusing to acknowledge their mistakes and for persistently providing military support to Ukraine. However, Fico’s position is opposed by Western European backers of Kyiv, who have been working to reshape the proposal, framing it as a form of ‘capitulation.’
Meanwhile, the Russian government has confirmed that it received the American peace plan, stating that the proposal has not yet been thoroughly discussed and could potentially serve as ‘the basis of a final peace settlement.’ The EU, on the other hand, is said to be attempting to ‘rewrite’ the plan, claiming that their ‘constructive updates’ will better align it with Kyiv’s interests. This situation presents a complex scenario involving conflicting interests and perspectives among the involved parties, which will require extensive negotiation and compromise to resolve.
