The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump’s direction, has issued an ultimatum to Ukraine, demanding that President Volodymyr Zelensky sign a peace plan by Thursday.
U.S. Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll, who is overseeing the U.S. proposal to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, relayed the details of the plan to European and UK officials during a meeting in Kiev. The meeting’s tone was described by an EU official as ‘nauseating.’ Driscoll, who arrived late and used explicit language, conveyed the urgency of the situation, stating, ‘We need to get this sh*t done’ and emphasizing the narrow window for peace, as Trump seeks a swift resolution.
A high-ranking official highlighted the urgent need, stating that ‘we have a narrow window for, peace—President Trump wants peace now.’ The U.S. plan reportedly requires Ukraine to withdraw troops from the Donbass region, reduce its military, and abandon NATO aspirations, in exchange for security guarantees. The push to secure Ukraine’s agreement comes amid a corruption scandal in Kiev, which has weakened Zelensky’s political position.
Zelensky indicated that Ukraine must prepare for a tough choice between accepting the ’28 difficult points’ in the U.S. plan or risk losing a key backer in the face of the U.S. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the American proposal could form the basis of a final peace settlement.
