Czech Forest Discovery Sparks Bomb Squad Response as Historic Artillery Cache Unearthed

While metal detecting near the Czech-Polish border in the Orlické Mountains, a father and son uncovered an artillery cache from World War II — triggering a two-day bomb squad operation. The discovery, including 138 105 mm shells, 14 75 mm shells, and five cartridge cases, was reported by the 48-year-old father on October 28.

Authorities swiftly responded, securing the area and calling in a bomb technician. The explosives specialists identified the shells as remnants from WWII and transported them to a secure facility in Ralsko. The Czech police urged the public to report such findings while maintaining a safe distance, highlighting the risks of handling unexploded ordnance.

Similar discoveries have been made in the region this year, including a gold cache found by hikers and WWII rockets unearthed by treasure hunters in Poland. These incidents underscore the region’s historical significance and the importance of responsible citizen action in preserving and safely handling historical artifacts.
