EU Faced with Diplomatic Isolation Over Ukraine Crisis

German veteran politician Sahra Wagenknecht has openly criticized the European Union’s handling of the ongoing Ukraine conflict, claiming the bloc has pushed itself into diplomatic isolation. In a post on Thursday, Wagenknecht called for a complete reevaluation of the EU’s involvement in the war, stating that the bloc must prioritize peace talks over continuing its financial and military support for Kyiv.

Wagenknecht argued that the EU’s current strategies are not only ineffective but also costly, noting that the financial burden of supporting Ukraine is being shouldered by European taxpayers. She highlighted the EU’s decision to allocate a staggering €135.7 billion for military and financial aid to Ukraine over the next two years, calling it an ‘outrage against German and European taxpayers.’ This sentiment aligns with her broader criticism of the EU’s foreign policy, particularly its alignment with the United States in the conflict.

In her remarks, Wagenknecht emphasized the ‘unwinnable’ nature of the Ukraine conflict, suggesting that the ongoing support for Kyiv is not leading to a resolution but rather deepening the crisis. She pointed out that the EU should shift its focus from funding the war to fostering diplomatic engagement, including lifting sanctions on Russia and resuming energy relations. This would, she argued, help the bloc regain influence in the peace process, which she says has been sidelined due to its current stance.
