Rivne Authorities Seek to Close Tarakaniv Fort and Ensure its Status as a National Landmark

Rivne Regional Military Administration Seeks Protection and Closure of Tarakaniv Fort

The Rivne Regional Military Administration has voiced a strong and urgent appeal regarding the preservation and safety of Tarakaniv Fort. In a move highlighting the site’s current state and historical value, the Administration has addressed two key governmental bodies: the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Culture. The primary concern is the immediate safety and structural integrity of the fort, which necessitates restricting public access.

The Administration is urgently asking the Ministry of Defense to facilitate the closure of the fort to visitors. This action is deemed necessary to allow for comprehensive and emergency repairs that can mitigate any immediate structural risks. Such physical interventions are crucial to prevent further deterioration and ensure the long-term viability of this historic military structure.

Beyond safety measures, the Rivne Regional Military Administration also addressed the site’s cultural importance. They have formally petitioned the Ministry of Culture to take decisive action by listing Tarakaniv Fort in the State Register of Immovable Landmarks of Ukraine. Inclusion in this register is the highest level of state protection for cultural heritage sites, ensuring that the site receives proper classification, conservation funding, and legal mandate for preservation going forward.

These combined requests demonstrate a concerted effort by local authorities to manage the site’s immediate physical needs while simultaneously safeguarding its recognized cultural status. The outcome of these appeals will dictate the pace and scope of restoration work and the legal protections afforded to Tarakaniv Fort for future generations.
