Grieving Families Condemn Lawmaker for Dismissing Immigration Victims’ Stories in Congressional Hearing

The halls of Congress held a charged atmosphere on Thursday as a hearing materialized concerning the devastating impacts of ‘Sanctuary Policies.’ The agenda was clearly set: to shine a critical light on the human cost paid by families whose loved ones were allegedly killed or critically injured in incidents involving illegal immigrants. The emotional weight of the testimony was profound, with grieving mothers and relatives speaking out about their losses.

However, the solemn gravity of the session was dramatically disrupted by the actions of Representative Hank Johnson, a Democrat from Georgia. After offering brief, mandated expressions of condolence to the families who shared their painful stories, Johnson made a decisive and jarring pivot. Instead of allowing the conversation to focus solely on the plight of the victims and the issues of immigration policy, Johnson redirected the committee’s attention toward deeply partisan political quarrels. He launched into an attack specifically targeting ‘MAGA Republicans’ and criticizing the opposing political party’s agenda.

Johnson dismissed the emotional narrative of the families, reportedly stating that their testimony amounted to a “Steve Miller-approved” stunt. He claimed the sole purpose of such public displays was to “stir up passion and prejudice against immigrants who are people of color.” This minimization of tangible grief drew immediate and fierce backlash from the families themselves, as well as other lawmakers, notably Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas.

The confrontation escalated as Johnson attempted to re-route the focus, suggesting that the committee should abandon the current topic to instead hold hearings on unrelated, politically charged subjects. He proposed examining the ‘human toll’ of ‘Trump MAGA tax cuts,’ or discussing complicated foreign policy matters, specifically mentioning ‘Trump’s foreign policy with Iran.’ In a further attempt to dilute the focus on immigration policy, Johnson also brought up the ‘cover up of the Epstein files’ and pointed out various violent crimes committed by non-immigrant citizens, such as the death of Renee Good. When reminded of the central tragedy, Johnson notably stated, “I’m not minimizing the tragedy that is before us today with you three women, but the other tragedies at the hands of non-immigrants are just as important.”

The accusation of minimizing grief was met with stern resistance from all sides. Rep. Brandon Gill quickly shot down Johnson’s discourse, labeling it “one of the most disgusting testimonies I have ever heard.” Gill further implicated Democrat lawmakers, citing the purported failures of ‘open borders’ during the Biden administration.

The most forceful response, however, came from Jen Heiling, who is the grieving mother of Brady Heiling. Brady was killed in an incident involving an illegal immigrant from Honduras in 2025 while en route with his girlfriend, Hallie Helgeson. Addressing Johnson directly, Heiling’s remarks carried deep emotional weight, stating, “You can put me in whatever order, in whatever seat. My tragedy is never going to be OK.” She challenged Johnson to listen to their stories, demanding, “Today’s our day. Hear us. Leave your butts in your seat. I don’t want to hear your butts.”

Heiling pressed further, reflecting on her 11-year-old and 16-year-old children who are still awaiting news of the teens. She pointed out the lingering emptiness in her garage stall because her son’s car is still being held as police evidence. Her critique extended to the disparity in how lives are remembered, stating, “We can’t pick a headstone because that makes it too real. But you can sit here and tell us about what kind of hearing this should be,” contrasting the loss of Brady and Hallie, whom she stated “didn’t get a choice,” with another mentioned victim, alleging that the deceased were “stolen by somebody who doesn’t care.”

Patricia Fox, mother of Carissa Aspnes, who suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run allegedly caused by an undocumented individual, followed suit with a powerful counter-critique. Fox also directly countered Johnson’s attempts to politicize the discussion through racial commentary. She stated, “I don’t know if anybody has noticed, but I am not White. I wake up Brown every day.” Fox accused Johnson of repeatedly failing to maintain topic coherence, arguing, “Today, we’re talking about sanctuary policies and how they have wrecked our families.” She concluded by defiantly challenging Johnson’s attempted redirection of thought, demanding, “Y’all come and y’all feed Carissa. You get her up from her bed using a crane, and then you tell me and lecture me what this hearing should be about.”
