The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued its first guidance requiring manufacturers of smart home devices, including air fryers, speakers, TVs, and fertility trackers, to respect user privacy by ensuring data security and transparency. The guidance emphasizes the need for companies to regularly delete collected data and provides recommendations for minimizing personal, information collection. Stephen Almond, the ICO’s executive director for regulatory risk, highlighted that these devices can gather sensitive information about users’ lives, including who they live with, their music preferences, and medication details. The guidance addresses the ‘internet of things’ (IoT) devices, including fertility trackers that record menstrual dates and body temperature before sending data to manufacturer servers. Additionally, smart speakers that monitor family members and visitors must allow users to configure settings that minimize personal information collection. The ICO warned manufacturers it stands ready to take enforcement action in the event of noncompliance. This initiative marks a significant step in regulating the expanding realm of connected devices and protecting consumer privacy.
