National Guard Deployed in Los Angeles Amid Anti-ICE Riots

The Department of Defense has deployed an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and protect federal assets amidst escalating civil unrest. The deployment, under Task Force 51, will include 4,100 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines, responding to anti-ICE riots and threats against law enforcement. Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that the deployment of National Guard members is illegal and not in consultation with local law enforcement leaders. In response, President Trump defended the decision, calling Newsom’s actions ‘incompetent’ and accusing the governor of being unable to protect ICE agents. A U.S. District Judge has sided with Newsom, but an appellate court is still reviewing the case. The troops will not be used for civilian law enforcement roles but will provide support to federal agencies. They have already completed training on de-escalation, crowd control, and the use of force. The deployment has sparked controversy, with critics accusing the Trump administration of using the National Guard for political theater and diverting resources from critical tasks like wildfire management and border security.
