Tragic Shooting at ‘No Kings’ Protest Claims Life of ‘Project Runway’ Designer

Utah experienced a tragic incident at a ‘No Kings’ protest over the weekend, resulting in the death of a 39-year-old fashion designer, Arthur Folasa Ah Loo. Ah Loo, who had previously appeared on the popular Bravo show ‘Project Runway’ and later returned for its revival series, was participating in the demonstration when he was shot by event security. The shooting occurred as the security personnel responded to an armed suspect, Arturo Gamboa, who was approaching the crowd with a rifle.

According to Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd, the security officers mistakenly identified Gamboa as a threat and opened fire, accidentally striking both Gamboa and Ah Loo. Despite the efforts of two SWAT medics who provided life-saving care at the scene, Ah Loo succumbed to his injuries later that night. Gamboa, who was found with a rifle and a gas mask in his backpack, was taken to the hospital and later booked into jail on a murder charge.

Ah Loo’s death has sparked a wave of condolences and support, with an online fundraiser raising over $200,000 for his funeral. His wife, as well as Utah state Rep. Verona Mauga, spoke about his passion for equity and equality, emphasizing his dedication to social justice. Ah Loo was also known for creating couture for cast members of ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ and had been invited by the late Queen Elizabeth II to present his collection at Buckingham Palace during London Fashion Week.

The incident has raised questions about the safety and handling of armed individuals at large public gatherings. While the details of the shooting are still under investigation, the police have stated that Gamboa had no criminal history, and the shooter was cooperating with investigators. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by individuals attending protests, even when they are not the intended targets of violence.
