Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna reported that nearly a dozen deputies were injured during anti-ICE riots as tensions escalated in the city. Protesters threw rocks, Molotov cocktails, and pyrotechnics at law enforcement during the unrest, which began on June 6 following ICE raids in southern California. Luna described the situation as dangerous, noting a clear distinction between peaceful demonstrators and individuals using violence against officers. This confrontation has intensified as law enforcement prepares for planned nationwide protests this weekend against the Trump administration.
In a recent press conference, Luna highlighted the challenges faced by officers, saying, “We have been encountering some interesting weapons out there. There is a big difference between the peaceful protesters and the individuals who are coming out with weapons to attack our folks.” He emphasized the need for a balance between protecting constitutional rights and ensuring the safety of both officers and the public. Law enforcement officials, including LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, have confirmed that they are fully prepared for the upcoming demonstrations, which are expected to draw unprecedented crowds.
McDonnell stated, “We’re closely monitoring developments and deploying our personnel and resources strategically to protect public safety while safeguarding every individual’s right to protest peacefully.” He warned that anyone intending to commit crimes, damage property, or harm others—including officers—would be arrested. The sheriff’s office and the Los Angeles Police Department have been working together to enforce the curfew, which remains in place through the weekend, to curb criminal activity that has been concentrated in the evening hours.
As the situation continues to unfold, officials are also focusing on protecting state infrastructure and ensuring that the protests remain within the bounds of lawful demonstration. The presence of the National Guard, deployed to quell violence, underscores the seriousness of the situation as authorities work to maintain control over the chaos that has emerged from the anti-ICE protests.
